People aged 65 and older have the highest risk of falling, with around a third of people aged 65 and over, and around half of the people aged 80 and over falling at least once a year.

While falls cause distress, pain, injury, loss of confidence, loss of independence, and mortality, they are a major cause of emergency hospital admissions. The Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) reported that in 2017 to 2018 there were around 220,160 emergency hospital admissions related to falls among patients aged 65 and over, with around 146,665 (66.6%) of these patients aged 80 and over.

In light of the huge number of emergency hospital admissions caused by falling, it is evident that now is a really bad time for a senior to fall since hospitals in the United Kingdom are overwhelmed with Covid-19 cases. Reports have for instance indicated that “as UK hospitals get swamped with coronavirus cases, other chronically ill patients are forced to wait for treatment.”

It is safe therefore, that seniors remain in their own homes and suffer no injuries that cause emergency hospital admissions. To ensure this, here are some tips on how to avoid falls for seniors;

Eat and drink well

Eating and drinking well can reduce the risk of falling since your body receives enough essential nutrients. Skipping meals could make you miss the required essential nutrients, reduce your energy, make you feel dizzy or light-headed, and lead to falls. To void falls, therefore, it is important that you eat and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

Keep active and exercise

Keeping active and exercising can improve balance, strength, coordination, and flexibility. Keeping physically active is thus recommended for avoiding falls among seniors. If you are not sure of which physical activity or exercises to perform, we recommend that you talk to your doctor or a healthcare professional about the type of exercise that would be good for you and follow their recommendation. A doctor may refer you to support from a physical or occupational therapist who can visit you at home to discuss an exercise program to suit you that will improve your balance, muscle strength, and gait (how you take steps).

You can also join a local health and fitness center where you can meet like-minded people and give each other encouragement to exercise regularly.

Use the right equipment and aids

Often times, seniors have mobility challenges that can lead to falls. We recommend that if you have mobility challenges, you use the right equipment and aids. We recommend talking to an occupational therapist or your doctor for a referral if you don’t have one. An occupational therapist can advise you on suitable adaptations to make your home safer, as well as aids to make day to day living tasks easier to perform. They can give you information about the extensive range of aids and adaptations to meet a wide variety of needs depending on your circumstances. Examples of equipment and aids include;

Walking aids such as a walking frame, stick or ramps;

Hand or grab rails to make it easier to get in an and out of a bath;

Raised seats for a chair or toilet to help you move between standing and sitting safely;

Aids for accessing those hard to reach places when washing or dressing.

Move safely around your home

Taking extra care when moving around the house can reduce the risk of falls for seniors. This involves taking extra care when standing up, reaching, or sitting down. For example, when moving from lying down to standing, it is recommended to up first and stay sitting for a moment or two, then standing up slowly and standing a few moments before trying to walk. To avoid falls, it is essential to ensure that you only move when you feel steady and to avoid moving when you feel unsteady. For example, there is no need to rush to the telephone when it rings.

Choose the right footwear and clothes

Wearing the right clothes and footwear can help to reduce the risk of death among seniors. We thus recommend that you;

Wear clothes that fit properly. It’s easy to trip on a coat, pair of trousers or a bathrobe that is too long.

Wear properly fitting shoes since ill-fitting shoes can increase the risk of falls.

Wear shoes and slippers that support your feet well and that have non-skid soles. Lace-ups can provide more stability, but if you find tying laces difficult then select footwear with fabric fasteners.

6. Keep your home free from obvious hazards

Making sure that potential hazards around the house are removed can help to reduce the risk of falls. We recommend that to prevent falls, you regularly check for anything that may unnecessarily restrict your movement or that could be a tripping hazard. For example:

Don’t leave clothes, newspapers, or empty containers on the floor or stairs where you may later trip over them.

Check that there are no tripping hazards from frayed or loose carpets and rugs, uneven floors, etc.

Close cabinet drawers so you won’t stumble over them.

Keep walkways free of clutter and furniture particularly sharp corners.

Clean up puddles of water or other spillages promptly to avoid slipping.

Take care around pets. They may suddenly move in front of your feet or jump on you.

Take extra care when washing, dressing and using the stairs

Avoid slips in the bathroom, bedroom and on the stairs with the following tips;

It’s never a good idea to grab a towel rack, shampoo holder, or soap tray for support in the shower. These cannot support a person’s weight.

Let the soap suds go down the drain before you move around in the shower to avoid slipping, or use a non-slip rubber mat.

Use a shower chair and a handheld shower attachment if you are prone to falling

It may be safer not to lock the bathroom door so that if you need help, a care assistant, family member, or emergency personnel can reach you without delay.

If transferring either from or to your bed is difficult for you, seek advice from health representatives about suitable aids such as blocks to raise the height of the bed.

While using stairs, avoid carrying any packages that will obstruct your view of the next step.

Keep at least one hand on the handrail while going up or downstairs.

Give all of your attention to moving up and downstairs and try not to be distracted e.g. by conversations or other sounds.

Make sure you can see clearly

To avoid falls, it is essential that you see clearly. This involves making sure that your home well-lit since inadequate lighting is another major hazard. To create a home that’s more suitable for the elderly, install brighter light bulbs where needed, particularly in stairways and narrow hallways. It is advised to add night-lights in bedrooms and bathrooms for better guidance at night.

Also, always wear glasses if you need them, but remember to remove reading glasses before you walk.

Be aware of medication side effects

It is essential to be aware of the possible side effects of some medicines which can increase the risk of falls. Taking several different medicines each day can increase this risk and may cause weakness or dizzy spells.

Always read the information about side effects that comes with each of your medicines.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects.

Ask for a review of your medicines if you are unsure or have not had a review for over a year.

Seek help when you need it

Having the right care and support when you need it can help you to live more safely and stay independent.
